How to Become Free Print
Written by Dr. John E. Russell Sr

1. God loves you and wants to set you free:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16, KJV

Not only did God tell you that he loves you, but he proved his love by sending his Son to die for you! His will deliver you from all self-destructive habits and give you a high quality life now--as well as in the life to come. Jesus said,

The thief [Satan] comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
John 10:10, NIV

Why is there so much evil in the world and why are so many in bondage?

2. Sin has enslaved us and separated us from God:

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 3:23,KJV

We were created for fellowship with God, but that fellowship was broken when Adam sinned by disobeying God. Sin brought us spiritual death and bondage:

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23, NIV

3. There are no substitutes for true freedom. Jesus teaches us the Truth and sets us free:

...Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
John 8:31-32, NIV

4. Jesus Christ Is The Only Source of Truth and Life. He is God's only provision to forgive our sin, set us free and give us a full and happy life:

Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
John 14:6, NIV

Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. [italics mine].
Romans 5:7-8, NIV

God demonstrated that Christ's death was accepted as a substitute for us by raising Christ from the dead:

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
1 Corinthians 15:3-8, NIV

It is not enough to know these truths.

5. Our part is to believe in Christ and confess Him as our Lord:

But what does it say? The Word (God's message in Christ) is near you, on your lips and in your heart; that is, the Word (the message, the basis and object) of faith which we preach, Because if you acknowledge {and} confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and in your heart believe (adhere to, trust in, and rely on the truth) that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart a person believes (adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Christ) and so is justified (declared righteous, acceptable to God), and with the mouth he confesses (declares openly and speaks out freely his faith) {and} confirms [his] salvation. The Scripture says, No man who believes in Him [who adheres to, relies on, and trusts in Him] will [ever] be put to shame {or} be disappointed.
Romans 10:8-11, AMP

6. The Holy Spirit will give your spirit a new birth.

This is the most important experience that you will ever have. God will set you free and he will bring new life into your being. This new life will make you more like the Lord Jesus. Jesus said,

You should not be surprised at my saying, "you must be born again."
John 3:7, NIV

Pray this prayer from your heart:

"Almighty God, I confess that I have sinned against you. I ask you to forgive me. I receive Christ as my Lord and Savior. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. In Jesus' Name, Amen."
